A specialist team of explosives experts from the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Green Mountain branch was dispatched to Derna following reports of unexploded ordnance. The discovery, involving mines dating back to the Second World War, was made in a residential and service area situated behind the historic Sahaba Mosque.
Upon arrival, the team established a security cordon to protect residents and nearby property before initiating a technical assessment of the danger. The experts successfully defused and handled the mines with high professional standards, ensuring no casualties or material damage occurred during the process. Following the operation, the recovered mines were safely transported to the CID headquarters in Al-Bayda for final disposal according to established protocols
