Iraqi Prime Minister dispatches aircraft to repatriate 151 migrants stranded in Libya

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, has authorised the deployment of a dedicated aircraft to repatriate 151 Iraqi nationals from Libya, marking a step in Baghdad’s ongoing efforts to manage illegal migration. Ahmed al-Sahhaf, the Chargé d’Affaires at the Iraqi Embassy in Libya, confirmed that all legal, administrative, and logistical arrangements have been finalised to ensure the safe and voluntary return of the citizens, in close coordination with relevant authorities in the capital.

The operation, overseen by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, is part of a broader governmental strategy to protect Iraqi nationals from the dangers posed by human smuggling syndicates. Al-Sahhaf noted that the embassy has provided essential humanitarian assistance to the migrants ahead of their departure, following direct supervision from senior officials in the foreign ministry.

This latest repatriation follows several successful missions in recent months that saw dozens of Iraqis returned home from North Africa. Al-Sahhaf emphasised that the government remains committed to addressing the humanitarian challenges of migration, pledging continued cooperation between the Foreign Ministry and domestic agencies to safeguard the rights and welfare of Iraqis abroad.
