The Gathering of Libyan Political Parties has launched a stinging critique of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), accusing it of entrenching institutional division and eroding national sovereignty. In a formal statement, the bloc argued that the mission has evolved from a supportive body into a mechanism that sustains the status quo, sponsoring political tracks formulated outside the public will to serve de facto authorities at the expense of national unity.
The gathering expressed its categorical rejection of any UN interference in the Libyan judiciary, particularly regarding the organisation of judicial authority and constitutional oversight. It characterised such actions as “foreign guardianship” that violates the independence of the courts and contravenes international law. According to the statement, the failure of successive UN-led initiatives has systematically weakened public trust in national institutions and prolonged the country’s chronic instability.
Concluding its assessment, the bloc called for a fundamental recalibration of UNSMIL’s role, demanding that its mandate be restricted to technical and advisory support only. The gathering urged a shift away from international political engineering in favour of a purely national process that respects the will of the Libyan people and safeguards the state’s independence from external dictates.
