National Oil Corporation achieves record reduction in gas flaring

The National Oil Corporation achieves a record reduction in gas flaring, a move toward environmental sustainability and economic efficiency. Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) has announced a reduction in gas flaring by more than 100 million cubic feet (mmcf) per day throughout 2025. The achievement marks a critical milestone in a broader roadmap that aims to slash flaring by a further 120 mmcf per day in 2026, eventually reaching “near-zero” flaring by 2030 in alignment with international climate initiatives.

This substantial reduction was facilitated through a series of technical overhauls across the NOC’s subsidiaries. Sirte Oil Company spearheaded the efforts with three landmark projects: rerouting Hattiba field condensates to prevent gasification, diverting 60 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) from the Lahib and Raguba fields into the national coastal grid, and rehabilitating the Lahib gas separation system to utilize 12 MMcf/d for gas-lift operations.

Complementing these efforts, Sarir Oil Operations processed approximately 25 mmcf per day and produced 1,800 barrels of condensate following upgrades at Contract Area 91 near Jakhira. Simultaneously, Waha Oil Company achieved a reduction of 20 mmcf per day at the North Deffa field after successfully maintaining and restarting dormant gas compressors.

The NOC emphasised that the recaptured gas has been redirected to supply power stations and petrochemical plants via the coastal network, effectively enhancing the utility of national resources while drastically reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. By setting a target to reach a 60% flaring reduction by next year, the corporation reaffirmed its commitment to a strict timetable for ending the wasteful and environmentally damaging practice of associated gas flaring by the end of the decade.
