Libya, Greece discuss frozen assets and maritime cooperation

The Libyan House of Representatives’ Committee for the Verification and Monitoring of Frozen Libyan Funds Abroad held official talks in Athens with the Greek Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Alexandra Papadopoulou. The discussions centered on safeguarding Libyan investments and aligning positions regarding outstanding financial files.

During the meeting, the Libyan delegation cited the profound historical ties between the two nations as a foundation for building a robust institutional partnership capable of navigating current international shifts. Committee members emphasized the sovereign nature of these funds, asserting they are the exclusive property of the Libyan people, frozen under international mandates to ensure their preservation. They further recalled their October 2025 request to the UN Security Council for the appointment of an independent international auditing firm to review all frozen assets, aimed at enhancing transparency.

For her part, the Greek Deputy Foreign Minister expressed Athens’ support for Libyan initiatives, affirming Tripoli’s right to monitor its assets within the banking system and stressing the need for international compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 2769 (2025). The discussions also touched upon security cooperation, with Greece reconfirming its support for the Libyan Coast Guard to enhance its operational capabilities.
In a separate technical session, the Libyan committee met with senior Greek Foreign Ministry officials, including Ambassador Maria Theofili, Director General and head of the office managing Greece’s UN Security Council membership, as well as the Director of the Middle East Department, Foivos Georgakakis, and the Head of the Legal Department, Artemis Papathanassiou. The Greek officials reaffirmed their commitment to activating Resolution 2769, highlighting that protecting these resources is a collective international responsibility to safeguard the rights of future Libyan generations.
