UNSMIL: 484 Casualties from War Remnants in Libya Since 2020

Since May 2020, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has documented 484 casualties caused by explosive remnants of war in Libya, including 174 fatalities—19 of whom were children. These figures underscore the lethal legacy of conflict that continues to endanger civilians nationwide. In response, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) recently conducted a specialised workshop for 21 Libyan Red Crescent volunteers, including seven women, to enhance their ability to identify hazardous ordnance and communicate risks effectively to local communities.

The training initiative focused on practical case studies and technical briefings regarding modern mine technology, which often evades traditional detection methods. By equipping local responders with these skills, UNSMIL aims to foster safer practices and strengthen community resilience. Ulrika Richardson, the UN Deputy Special Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator, emphasised that organisations like the Libyan Red Crescent are vital in reaching vulnerable families, noting that clear risk communication is the most effective tool for preventing further loss of life.

The urgency of these efforts was highlighted by a recent tragedy in Misrata, where a child was killed, and his brother blinded after handling a discarded grenade in a residential area. Volunteers at the workshop stressed that the widespread presence of weapons and explosives stored near civilian homes significantly heightens the danger. According to UNSMIL, addressing these challenges through sustained awareness and international safety standards remains a priority for protecting civilians and ensuring long-term stability in Libya.
