Egypt affirms its support for the political settlement in Libya

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, has reaffirmed Cairo’s staunch support for a political settlement in Libya, emphasizing that the process must remain strictly Libyan-led and free from foreign interference to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. During talks with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf in Tunisia, both officials highlighted the importance of the tripartite consultative mechanism—comprising Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria—as a pivotal framework for coordinating regional efforts to end Libya’s division and prepare the necessary conditions for simultaneous national elections.

The discussions also addressed the conflict in Sudan, with Abdelatty calling for an urgent humanitarian truce and the establishment of safe corridors to facilitate a comprehensive ceasefire and a Sudanese-owned political transition that preserves national institutions. Regarding Gaza, Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s endorsement of US President Donald Trump’s initiative to launch a “Peace Council.” He stressed the necessity of implementing the second phase of the US plan, supporting the National Committee for Gaza Management, and deploying international stabilization forces to monitor the ceasefire and accelerate early recovery and reconstruction efforts.
