During January, the EU’s Operation IRINI tracked 65 suspicious flights and initiated over 300 radio contact calls with commercial vessels in the Mediterranean to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya. Supported by 24 member states, the operation maintains surveillance over 25 airports and 16 ports. These intensified activities aim to ensure adherence to Security Council resolutions and prevent the illicit flow of weapons into the conflict-affected region.
Admiral Marco Casapieri Takes Command of EU Naval Mission IRINI
Marking his first visit since assuming command, Admiral Marco Casapieri traveled to Tripoli to discuss maritime security and strategic cooperation with General Salah al-Din al-Namroush, Chief of General Staff. The discussions focused on bolstering stability and advancing the Libya-EU partnership. This diplomatic push coincides with the European Union extending IRINI’s mandate until March 2027, while the UN Security Council renewed naval inspection authorizations for six months, despite abstentions from Russia and China during the voting process.
