UNSMIL condemns killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and calls for urgent investigation

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has condemned the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, warning that such acts of targeted violence jeopardise the rule of law and the nation’s fragile peace. In an urgent appeal to Libyan authorities, the mission demanded a “swift and transparent” investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice, stressing that decisive measures are required to dismantle the prevailing pattern of violence across the country.

The incident occurred on 3 February in the Al-Hamada region near Zintan, where Mr Gaddafi’s office confirmed he was killed during an armed assault on his residence. While extending its condolences to his family, the UN mission expressed deep dismay over the attack, noting that it underscores a critical need to address extrajudicial killings nationwide. Such acts, the mission stated, constitute a profound violation of the sanctity of human life and a direct threat to Libya’s stability.

UNSMIL has called on all political and military factions to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any behaviour that could exacerbate tensions or compromise national security. The mission reiterated its position that only a comprehensive political solution can deliver long-term stability and development in Libya, urging a collective move away from violence toward a negotiated settlement.
