Haftar Discusses Advancing the Political Process and Elections with UN Officials in Benghazi

Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, received a high-level delegation from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) at his headquarters in Benghazi today, led by Hanna Tetteh and accompanied by her deputy, Stephanie Khoury. The meeting was also attended by senior Libyan military officials, including Assistant Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Basem al-Bouayshi, Office Director General Ayoub Bouaif, and Secretary-General of the General Command Lieutenant General Khairy al-Tamimi.

Commander-in-Chief Meets with Head of UN Mission to Discuss Roadmap and Political Process in Libya

During the discussions, Field Marshal Haftar emphasized the General Command’s support for the UN’s efforts to advance the political process in Libya, focusing on the necessity of holding presidential and parliamentary elections. Both parties highlighted the importance of continuous coordination to ensure the achievement of genuine security and political stability on the ground.

For her part, Tetteh provided a detailed briefing on the work of the structured dialogue committees, which aim to map out a clear roadmap for the transitional phase and upcoming elections. She reaffirmed the Mission’s commitment to supporting all Libyan parties in ensuring the success of this political process. Concluding the meeting, the two sides agreed to strengthen mechanisms for ongoing consultation to support the steps taken by the UN Mission in bolstering comprehensive stability across the country.
