The Acting Minister of Interior of the Government of National Unity, Major General Emad Trabelsi, held a meeting with his Italian counterpart, Matteo Piantedosi, attended by senior security delegations from both the Libyan and Italian sides. The talks primarily focused on exploring mechanisms to develop joint security cooperation and exchange technical information and expertise between security agencies in both countries to ensure regional stability, especially amid current security challenges in the Mediterranean region.
During the meeting, the two ministers discussed in detail the file of land and sea border security, intensifying joint efforts to combat illegal migration, and other issues of mutual interest. Both sides emphasized the need for continuous and direct coordination mechanisms between the ministries of interior to achieve strategic goals that serve the security and stability of Libya and Italy, ensuring a radical treatment of the common challenges facing the two countries.

In this context, the new Italian measures regarding migration management across the Mediterranean were addressed, as Piantedosi reviewed a set of security procedures that Rome intends to implement starting next June. These measures include imposing temporary restrictions on entering Italian territorial waters for a distance of 12 nautical miles for an initial period of 30 days, extendable up to a maximum of six months, as part of Italy’s efforts to assess potential threats to national security and manage any exceptional migration pressures.
