In its maritime update for February 8–14, 2026, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 227 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya while attempting to cross the Mediterranean. The operations occurred in two stages: 98 migrants (including 12 women and two children) were stopped off Zawiya on February 8, while 129 others were intercepted after departing from Al-Khoms on February 11. Additionally, one body was recovered on February 14.

IOM Reports Interception and Return of 753 Migrants to Libya in One Week

These latest figures bring the total number of migrants returned to Libya since the start of 2026 to 1,008 individuals—comprising 869 men, 103 women, and 36 children. During this same period, 484 deaths or disappearances were documented along the Central Mediterranean route. In comparison, 27,116 migrants were returned in 2025 with 1,314 casualties recorded, while 2024 saw 21,762 interceptions and 1,699 deaths or missing persons.

IOM Report: Alarming Statistics for Mediterranean Migrants from Libya in Early 2026

IOM data for the first half of February alone shows 781 interceptions and 56 casualties. The organization emphasized that these statistics are estimates based on the Missing Migrants Project and are subject to updates. Furthermore, the IOM reiterated its position that it does not participate in interception or rescue operations conducted by authorities, maintaining that Libya cannot be considered a safe port for the return of migrants.
