Operational testing at the B1-NC216A exploratory well, located within Block NC216 in the Ghadames Basin of western Libya, has yielded impressive production rates exceeding 2,000 barrels per day (bpd). These flows, described as surpassing initial expectations, confirm the high economic viability of the region’s oil reservoirs.
Technical reports indicate stable and robust flows from the well, reinforcing confidence in the geological formations of the targeted area and marking a successful conclusion to exploration efforts. This achievement serves as a fundamental pillar for advancing Block NC216 toward active production, supported by the highly positive indicators derived from preliminary testing.

Al-Harouge Oil Operations Adds 1,100 New Barrels to General Production
Scientific Methodology Behind the Discovery
Sirte Oil and Gas Production and Manufacturing Company attributed this milestone to a technical strategy based on 3D seismic surveys and precise reservoir studies. This scientific approach enabled highly accurate drilling placement and the targeting of the most productive layers.
In light of these results, preparations are underway to drill a third well in the same block in the near future, with expectations to raise the total production of the area to over 4,000 bpd. These moves are part of a broader vision to exploit untapped potential and provide additional economic value to the national energy sector.
Institutional Coordination Supporting Exploration
Mustafa Hammad, Chairman of Sirte Oil, praised the continuous support from the National Oil Corporation (NOC), specifically highlighting the Exploration Department for its diligent project monitoring. He emphasized that this close cooperation is the primary driver for achieving strategic goals and increasing extraction rates.
Hammad noted that the ambition extends beyond a single exploratory well, as efforts are focused on transforming the entire block into a fully integrated oil field to be added to the company’s assets. These steps align with directives from Eng. Masoud Suleiman, Chairman of the NOC, to accelerate exploration activities and integrate new sites into the production system as soon as possible.
Boosting Reserves and National Capacity
This discovery contributes to compensating for produced reserves and enhancing the country’s overall production capacity amidst current challenges. It is part of a series of recent successes by the NOC, which include five discoveries across various sedimentary basins, aimed at ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
The latest success in the Ghadames Basin reaffirms its status as one of Libya’s most promising regions, given its vast untapped reserves. Current data proves that the basin remains a key future asset for expanding oil operations across the country.
The development of this block is expected to revitalize the national economy by increasing financial revenues, creating new job opportunities, and stimulating further investment. Furthermore, this success strengthens the attractiveness of the Libyan oil sector for international partners, opening the door for major exploratory projects in the near future.
