The Historic Cities Management Authority has called for the preservation and documentation of the Libyan Tea Set “Shahi al-A’la” tradition, emphasizing its status as a vital pillar of Libya’s intangible cultural heritage. The Authority noted that this custom transcends being a mere daily habit, embodying the deep social bonds and hospitality values inherited by Libyans throughout history, making it an inseparable part of the national identity.

Asida: A Dish of Heritage and Healing

The roots of this ritual date back to the 19th century, when it was initially associated with the elite and the Karamanli court and was named then “The Pasha’s Drink,” reflecting the prestige and generosity shown to prominent guests. Over time, the tradition spread across all social classes and regions, evolving into a social rite that gathers families and friends, providing a rich space for human connection.

Traditional tools are essential to the tea’s uniqueness. Its preparation requires specific skills and the precise tools such as teapot “barrad” that comes in two sizes, and  a frothing cup “laggama” to ensure the perfect foam, the sugar and tea canisters. All These pieces are elegantly arranged on a polished stainless steel circular tray. The attention to the cleanliness of the utensils, the traditional small stove, are fundamental element that gives the tea its authentic flavor and distinctive character, reinforcing its value as a deeply rooted social practice with profound cultural significance that must be protected for future generations.
