A public demonstration recently took place in Misrata’s Al-Nasr Square, where citizens voiced their rising opposition to irregular migration, which they consider a direct threat to Libyan sovereignty and national identity. The Misrata Movement Against Settlement and Irregular Migration commended the participants, labelling them the “safety valve for the nation,” and stressing that preserving Libya is a collective responsibility that demands active confrontation, not silence.
Following these developments, the movement issued a decisive statement declaring its absolute rejection of any endeavours aimed at settling foreigners within the country. The group called for the stringent application of national legislation against all infiltrators, as well as against anyone providing them with facilities for residence or employment within Libya.
On the legal front, the statement demanded that the Public Prosecution Office disclose the status of a complaint filed by the movement regarding infiltrators, insisting on the accountability of anyone who provided them shelter, transport, or job opportunities within the city. To enforce this, the movement insisted on applying the governing laws for foreign residency and combating irregular migration and settlement, specifically Laws No. (6 of 1987), (19 of 2010), and (24 of 2023).
The movement also noted that national media coverage of the settlement and irregular migration file had been insufficient, calling on media outlets to adopt an active awareness-raising role to inform the public of the danger this poses to national sovereignty.
Security-wise, the statement underlined the importance of coordinating efforts between military and security agencies to secure Libyan borders and prevent migrant influxes. It called for dedicating military forces to protecting the border strip instead of deploying them within cities, acknowledging existing official efforts while demanding more serious follow-up on what it termed a “file that directly impinges upon national sovereignty.”
The movement concluded by affirming the continuation of its activities in a peaceful and patriotic manner, standing firm on defending Libyan sovereignty and protecting the country’s identity from any security threats.
