Egyptian Foreign Ministry Meets Families of Missing Citizens in Libya

Ambassador Haddad El‑Gohary, Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs and Egyptians Abroad, met with families of missing citizens in Benghazi and several Libyan provinces to brief them on the latest developments regarding the sinking of a migrant boat off the coast of Tobruk last July. The incident led to the rescue and repatriation of a number of Egyptians, as well as the transfer of identified remains back to Egypt.

During the meeting, El‑Gohary reviewed the ministry’s ongoing efforts in coordination with Libyan authorities in Benghazi to match DNA samples with unidentified remains in order to repatriate them. He also discussed current procedures for deporting Egyptian citizens released from prisons in Tripoli and western Libya.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that these efforts are part of its broader mission to protect and care for citizens abroad, particularly in humanitarian cases linked to illegal migration. The ministry, together with the Ministry of Migration, renewed its appeal to Egyptian families not to fall prey to human‑trafficking gangs, stressing the importance of adhering to legal entry regulations of neighboring countries. It further urged families of the missing to pursue legal and judicial action against traffickers and those involved in such crimes.
