Direct China-Libya Maritime Route Upgrade

06

A significant operational upgr has been implemented on the international maritime route connecting East Asian ports, specifically from China and South Korea, to Libyan terminals. This strategic move aims to reshape the landscape of maritime transport and bolster international trade flows. Mustafa Al-Sallak, Benghazi Branch Manager at “World Seas Shipping Agencies” (the official agent for the Chinese shipping giant COSCO), emphasized that this development is not the launch of a brand-new line, but rather a profound technical and logistical optimization of a service that has existed for over a decade, aligning it with the modern demands of the Libyan market.

The pivotal shift in this upgrade lies in the modification of the vessels’ operational trajectory. For years, the line relied on a traditional transshipment system via Greek ports, which involved multiple stops and additional handling operations that inevitably extended cargo delivery times. Under the new formula, the mechanism has transitioned to a more direct and efficient route. Vessels now depart from Chinese and Korean ports, passing through designated Asian hubs to reach Port Said in Egypt, and from there, proceed directly to their final destinations at the Juliana Free Zone Port in Benghazi and the Port of Misrata. This adjustment is expected to slash shipping time by approximately 30 full days, representing a breakthrough in commodity availability and supply chain stability.

Logistically, this upgrade fuels national ambitions to transform Juliana Port in Benghazi into a regional transit hub within the Mediterranean basin, capitalizing on Libya’s unique geographical position as a gateway connecting Africa to Asian and European markets. This advanced maritime path integrates seamlessly with national infrastructure plans, particularly the highway project linking Ajdabiya and Kufra to Chad. Such connectivity paves the way for linking Libyan seaports to the heart of the African continent, reinforcing Libya’s potential to assume a leadership role in regional logistics.

Economically, this development—led by major operators such as “World Seas” and Medship—carries tangible positive implications. Reducing transit time contributes to lower operational, insurance, and freight costs, which ultimately benefits the consumer through more competitive product pricing. Furthermore, it opens broad horizons for creating specialized employment opportunities in stevedoring, warehousing, and maritime services. It also drives the modernization of Libyan ports in Benghazi, Sirte, and Tobruk, ensuring they are equipped to handle increasing commercial momentum. This path does not merely serve import activities; it lays a foundational stone in the institutional memory of the maritime sector, ensuring the sustainability of logistical improvements and addressing global economic challenges with an ambitious national vision.
