Belgasem Haftar, Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, conducted an inspection tour of the Benina International Airport development project in Benghazi to monitor construction progress. The visit confirmed that the new international passenger terminal has surpassed a 70% completion rate, forming a key part of the strategic plan to upgrade the airport’s facilities and operational capacity.
The Director General reviewed the ongoing work at the international terminal, which spans 15,000 square meters. Technical assessments indicate that primary structural works are largely finished, with current efforts shifting toward interior finishing and exterior cladding. The project adheres to an accelerated timeline designed to ensure rapid delivery while maintaining the rigorous technical standards required for modern aviation infrastructure.
The Benina Airport redevelopment is a cornerstone of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund’s broader strategy to modernize the nation’s transport sector. This vision aims to transform the airport into a gateway capable of handling increasing passenger volumes. The upgrades include modernizing baggage systems, lounges, and runways, alongside enhancing safety and logistical support to meet international aviation requirements.
As the primary aerial artery for eastern Libya, Benina International Airport plays a pivotal role in connecting Benghazi to regional and global hubs. The completion of this project is expected to stimulate economic and commercial activity while facilitating travel. Furthermore, the modernized infrastructure will support broader reconstruction efforts by attracting investment and streamlining movement for the business community.
This inspection reflects the Fund’s policy of direct field oversight to address technical challenges and ensure steady progress. The Fund confirmed that the project remains aligned with approved engineering standards, emphasizing the integration of advanced service systems within the international terminal to provide a seamless travel experience ahead of its upcoming operational launch.
