A massive power failure has completely crippled production wells across the Sarir, Tazerbo, and Hasawna fields today, Saturday, the Great Man-Made River Project authority announced. The sudden blackout has brought water pumping operations to a grinding halt, freezing vital supplies to multiple cities and agricultural projects.
The operational collapse hit several key facilities sequentially. While the Hasawna wellfield was plunged into darkness earlier this morning at 2:30 AM, a widespread blackout later this afternoon severed power to the Sarir and Tazerbo fields, the Ajdabiya holding reservoir, and the main pumping station in Benghazi.
With the electricity grid down, the authority confirmed that the shutdown of all active wells across the three strategic fields has immediately disrupted downstream water distribution. The network, which serves as a national lifeline, remains incapable of supplying municipal and agricultural consumers until power is restored.
Addressing potential shortages, management stated that any reduction in water supply is entirely due to circumstances beyond its control, given the system’s absolute reliance on grid stability. Technical teams are on standby to reactivate the wells and normalize water security as soon as the electricity supply is stabilized.
