Libya and Sudan Strengthen Coordination Over Refugee Crisis and Bilateral Cooperation

President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Menfi, received Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem Ahmed and his accompanying delegation at the Council’s headquarters in Tripoli on Sunday evening. The meeting focused on several issues, primarily the conditions of the Sudanese community in Libya, the displaced persons’ file, and methods to broaden mutual cooperation.

,The Sudanese Minister conveyed greetings from the President of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to President al-Menfi. The Minister also extended congratulations on the return of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) to its official headquarters in Tripoli, viewing this as a sign of Libya’s growing regional stability and its restored political influence within the African continent.

Focus on Humanitarian Challenges and Displacement

Discussions centered heavily on the status of the Sudanese community living in Libya amidst the exceptional circumstances caused by Sudan’s internal conflict. Both parties examined the humanitarian challenges regarding Sudanese displaced persons, specifically concerning shelter and basic service provision. Minister Mohieddin Salem Ahmed expressed Sudan’s gratitude for Libya’s supportive stance, praising the humanitarian aid provided by both the Libyan government and people to those fleeing the conflict zones.

For his part, Mohamed al-Menfi emphasized the strength of Libyan-Sudanese relations, rooted in long-standing historical, social, and cultural ties. He reiterated Libya’s commitment to maintaining close coordination regarding the humanitarian situation, stressing his country’s dedication to alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people and supporting efforts aimed at achieving national stability.

Joint Strategic and Diplomatic Coordination

The two sides agreed on the importance of intensifying efforts in the coming period by enhancing communication channels and exchanging perspectives on regional challenges. They affirmed the need to develop cooperation mechanisms in both diplomatic and humanitarian fields to ensure a more effective response to ongoing crises while serving the mutual interests of both nations.

These talks occur as the crisis in Sudan continues to impact the regional humanitarian landscape, leading to significant displacement into neighboring countries like Libya.
