Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, along with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti, held extensive talks in Cairo with the UN Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, to review the latest developments and address key obstacles hindering the political settlement. The consultations focused on strengthening coordination between Libya’s neighboring countries and the UN Support Mission to ensure seamless integration of regional and international efforts aimed at stabilizing the nation and mitigating its current political and security challenges.
The participants reaffirmed their full backing for the United Nations’ mandate, with the Egyptian Foreign Minister underscoring Cairo’s commitment to facilitating UN mediation and promoting domestic dialogue to successfully execute the roadmap and fulfill the political transition. Abdelatty outlined the core tenets of the Egyptian stance, emphasizing that a sustainable resolution must be driven by exclusive Libyan ownership, and urged the swift, simultaneous holding of presidential and legislative elections to resolve institutional fragmentation.
Furthermore, he stressed the critical necessity of the immediate and synchronized withdrawal of all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters as an indispensable prerequisite for restoring Libyan sovereignty and safeguarding regional security. For her part, the UN envoy expressed appreciation for the pivotal role of Libya’s neighboring states, praising the ongoing consultation within the trilateral mechanism while reiterating the UN’s dedication to working with regional partners and Libyan factions to advance a comprehensive, lasting peace agreement.
