The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, affirmed the enduring and inseparable nature of the historical ties between Egypt and Libya, praising Cairo’s steadfast and unconditional support through all historical and political turning points. Speaking during a plenary session of the Egyptian House of Representatives, he highly commended Egypt’s continuous backing of the Libyan people.
Milestones of Military and Humanitarian Support
The Speaker reviewed the multifaceted assistance provided by Egypt, recalling its pivotal role since 2011 in securing the shared eastern borders and combating terrorist groups. He also highlighted the urgent humanitarian initiatives directed by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to relieve Derna city following its recent disaster, noting the significant impact of medical and relief aid, as well as the prominent political and military significance of deploying Egyptian aircraft carriers to support the Libyan people.
Political Positions and Historical Roots of Resistance
On the political front, he praised Egyptian diplomacy for maintaining a consistent stance aimed at forging a purely “Libyan-Libyan” consensus that leads to holding parliamentary and presidential elections fulfilling Libyan aspirations. Reflecting on history, he emphasized that Egypt has always been a safe haven and an enlightenment hub for the region; its support, intellectuals, and media never ceased backing Libyan revolutionaries against Italian colonialism, despite Egypt itself being under British occupation at the time, thwarting all attempts to sever Egyptian supplies to the Libyan resistance.
