Under the directives of General Saddam Khalifa Haftar, deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Honorary President of the Khalifa International Foundation (KIF), the Foundation has launched an awareness and field campaign titled “Together for a Greener Mountain” Timed with rising summer temperatures and the Eid al-Adha season, the initiative aims to institutionalize a preventative approach to forest fire management, shifting the focus from reaction to proactive protection.
To bolster operational readiness, KIF provided critical logistical support to the National Safety Authority in al-Bayda, whose jurisdiction spans vast areas of the Green Mountain. The support package included the maintenance of four fire engines, reactivation of the emergency hotline for faster response times, and the provision of six field support units, six specialized water hoses (1.5 and 2.5 inches), and two high-precision water nozzles. These enhancements are designed to significantly reduce intervention times and improve on-ground efficiency.
The campaign highlights that human behavior remains the primary catalyst for environmental disasters, particularly during outdoor activities and holiday outings. KIF emphasized that forest fires in Libya have evolved into a complex phenomenon fueled by economic pressures, such as the rising demand for charcoal and firewood, which accelerates environmental degradation and threatens local livelihoods.
KIF affirmed that forest protection is a shared social responsibility. The Foundation stressed that the “silent threat” begins with a lack of awareness rather than the flame itself, noting that responsible individual behavior is the most effective tool for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Green Mountain’s natural resources.
